Mallorca 312 for UAE Cyclists: Race Preparation and Planning Your Trip From Abu Dhabi
For cyclists based in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and across the UAE, Mallorca 312 offers a memorable spring goal: a demanding European Gran Fondo, spectacular mountain roads and the opportunity to combine cycling with a Mediterranean holiday.
Preparing well means more than building fitness. It means understanding how riding in Mallorca differs from your usual training, planning the journey and arriving ready for an early start and a long day.
I live in Mallorca and have participated in the event seven times. In my last four appearances on the 167 km route, I have finished inside the overall top 10, with a best result of sixth overall. I have also won my category. That experience helps me connect your preparation in the UAE with the demands of the roads you will ride here.
From Abu Dhabi to Mallorca with Etihad
Etihad has operated a seasonal service between Abu Dhabi and Palma de Mallorca. When operating on suitable dates, that direct connection can make Mallorca particularly attractive for UAE-based cyclists. Etihad’s seasonal route announcement
However, seasonal availability matters. Do not assume the service will operate for the late-April event: April 2027 availability has not been confirmed in the announcement linked above. Check Etihad’s published schedule for your exact travel dates before booking. Confirm bicycle carriage, packing requirements and baggage allowances too.
Whether travelling directly or with a connection, I recommend allowing time to recover from the journey, assemble and check your bike, collect your event number and complete some easy riding. Arriving with enough time is part of preparation.
Choose your distance—and prepare specifically
Mallorca 312 currently offers three distances: 167, 226 and 312 km. Always check the organiser’s current route and event guide before finalising your plan. Official rider information
The longer routes demand greater durability, more hours of feeding and careful pacing throughout the day. But the shortest route is not automatically the easiest.
The 167 km route includes approximately 2,500 metres of climbing; the 2026 route guide lists 2,475 metres. For riders targeting a competitive result, fast groups and changes of pace add another challenge. Your preparation should reflect both the distance and your ambition. Completing the event comfortably and competing near the front require different decisions. 2026 official route guide
Bring your UAE fitness to the mountains
Your training in the UAE provides the starting point. The question is how to prepare that fitness for Mallorca’s sustained climbs, descents and changing rhythm.
I look at your recent riding, access to climbing, indoor training and ability to maintain useful power over several hours. Then we build the preparation around your actual week. For a rider balancing training with business travel, consistency and realistic planning matter. Controlled endurance work provides the foundation, with demanding sessions chosen for a clear purpose.
The first climb can shape your ride
The event starts early, with departures currently scheduled between 06:30 and 07:00. Practise your morning routine beforehand: waking, eating and being ready to ride.
In my experience, the opening kilometres can be fast. After roughly 30 kilometres, the approach to the first major climb becomes an important moment. For riders near the front, the group you climb with can influence much of the following ride. Finding a group that suits your ability is valuable. Forcing yourself to stay with a group beyond your capacity can compromise the rest of the day.
This is why I want your training zones to reflect current ability. We prepare for the climb with realistic targets, including how to manage the steeper sections without spending too much energy.
Practise your feeding before you travel
Your nutrition strategy should already be familiar when you reach Mallorca. We need to understand what you tolerate, how you carry your food and drink, and how you will manage feed stations. Your plan should account for expected riding time, conditions and the possibility of a longer day.
A fast rider may want to minimise stops to remain with a group. Another rider may benefit from planned stops that make the event manageable. Both approaches need preparation.
Prepare for descents as well as climbs
For riders whose usual routes offer limited mountain descending, this deserves particular attention. Cornering, braking, road surfaces and riding around others all affect confidence and control. Route familiarity helps, but conditions can change and must be assessed on the day.
Where possible, include appropriate descending practice before the event. Arriving early can also provide an opportunity to become more familiar with local riding without turning the final days into another training camp.
Wind and weather change the strategy
Mallorca in April can offer warm sunshine, but a UAE rider should also prepare for cool early starts, mountain conditions, wind and rain. Clothing decisions should follow the forecast. Bring suitable layers rather than packing only for a sunny afternoon beside the beach.
Wind also influences pacing. A long headwind toward the finish can make a suitable group particularly valuable. Knowing that in advance helps us decide how much effort to spend on earlier climbs.
A cycling goal and a Mallorca holiday
Platja de Muro and nearby Alcúdia make an appealing base for combining the event with time on the island. For UAE riders travelling with family, the trip can extend beyond event day: beaches, local restaurants and time to enjoy Mallorca after the main goal. Plan accommodation, transfers and recovery alongside the training.
The objective is to arrive prepared enough to enjoy both the challenge and the destination.
Individual preparation and VIP access
I coach UAE-based riders remotely from Mallorca, building individual training around their goals, work and travel. For Mallorca 312, we can connect that preparation with pacing, feeding, equipment and practical route guidance.
For coaching clients, I can also help arrange VIP access directly through the event organiser, subject to availability and confirmation.
